14 dead and 129 missing in China as 2 million flee from the storm

Good morning. If you’re just joining us, here is the latest update on the progress of Super Typhoon Ragasa and the devastation it has caused.

– The strongest storm in years is set to hit China’s Guangdong province, while Hong Kong’s storm level is at its highest level of 10

– At least 14 people have been killed in Hualien, Taiwan, a popular tourist area. 

At least 129 people are missing after a town, Guangfu, was flooded by a deluge from a barrier lake that burst its banks on Tuesday afternoon. Around 60 million tonnes of water was released, the Taiwanese government said.

– As of last night, more than 1.89 million people have been evacuated in China’s Guangdong province, local authorities say.

– At least four more people were reported to have been killed in the Philippines. 

– About 28 inches (70cm) of rain has fallen on eastern areas.
