FIFA raises alarm over expensive travel for World Cup matches

FIFA has raised concerns over New Jersey’s decision to charge $150 for round-trip transit to World Cup matches, warning that the steep increase could discourage fans from attending games.

The fare marks a tenfold jump from the usual $15 cost for the same route and comes on top of already expensive match tickets, which can run into thousands of dollars, particularly in the resale market. MetLife Stadium is scheduled to host eight matches, including the final on July 19.

New Jersey Transit CEO Kris Kolluri  defended the pricing, citing higher passenger volumes due to limited parking around the stadium and increased operational costs tied to World Cup security requirements.

However, FIFA Chief Operating Officer Heimo Schirgi said the move could push fans toward alternative transport options, raising concerns about congestion and delays.

“The current pricing model will have a chilling effect. Elevated fares inevitably push fans toward alternative transportation options,” Schirgi said, warning that it could undermine the economic benefits and long-term legacy of hosting the tournament.

He also criticized the expectation that FIFA should absorb the additional costs, calling it “unprecedented” compared to other global sporting events.

Meanwhile, New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill argued that the state should not bear the financial burden, stating that NJ Transit faces a $48 million bill to ensure fan safety while FIFA is generating billions in revenue.

FIFA rejected the claim, clarifying that while it expects around $11 billion in revenue from the tournament, it operates as a non-profit organization, reinvesting earnings into the global development of football, particularly for youth and women.

The governing body also praised other host cities for maintaining affordable transit fares, highlighting the importance of accessibility for fans attending one of the world’s biggest sporting events.
