Double Super Over drama! South Africa stun Afghanistan in World Cup classic

Ahmedabad: Cricket fans witnessed an unforgettable spectacle at the ICC T20 World Cup as South Africa finally overcame Afghanistan in a heart-stopping second Super Over thriller.

What began as a competitive Group D encounter turned into an instant classic, with both teams locked at 187 runs after 20 overs, pushing the contest into a Super Over. But the drama didn’t end there.

In the first Super Over, Afghanistan piled pressure on South Africa by setting a challenging 18-run target. The Proteas fought back bravely but managed 17 runs for the loss of one wicket leaving the contest tied once again and sending the stadium into a frenzy.

With tensions soaring, the match headed into a rare second Super Over. This time, South Africa unleashed a fearless and explosive batting display, hammering 24 runs to set Afghanistan a daunting target under immense pressure.

Chasing in a do-or-die scenario, Afghanistan faltered in the high-voltage moment, and South Africa sealed a sensational victory in one of the most dramatic finishes of the tournament.

Earlier, South Africa had posted a formidable 187 for 6, powered by a commanding 61 from Ryan Rickelton and a fluent 59 by Quinton de Kock. The pair stitched together a crucial 114-run partnership that laid the foundation for a big total.

Afghanistan refused to back down, matching the total with grit and determination to force the electrifying Super Overs. Azmatullah Omarzai starred with three wickets, while skipper Rashid Khan claimed two in a spirited bowling effort.

It was a contest filled with momentum swings, pressure moments, and edge-of-the-seat drama — a true World Cup classic.
