Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) produced a batting masterclass to defeat Mumbai Indians (MI) by 18 runs in a high-scoring encounter at the Wankhede Stadium in Match 20 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. After being put in to bat, RCB piled up a daunting 240/4, and despite a spirited chase from MI, the visitors held their nerve to clinch an important win.
Phil Salt, Virat Kohli lay foundation
RCB’s innings was built on explosive contributions from multiple batters. Phil Salt set the tone early with a blistering 78 off just 36 balls, smashing six fours and six sixes to put Mumbai under immediate pressure. He found good support from Virat Kohli, who anchored the innings with a composed 50 off 38 deliveries, ensuring stability while others attacked around him.
Rajat Patidar and Tim David provide late fireworks
The real momentum shift came in the middle overs when Rajat Patidar unleashed a stunning counterattack. The right-hander hammered 53 runs off just 20 balls, peppering the boundary with five sixes and four fours. His aggressive approach completely disrupted MI’s bowling plans.
Tim David added the finishing touches with a quickfire 34 off 16 balls, helping RCB cross the 240-mark. Mumbai’s bowlers struggled to contain the run flow, with Jasprit Bumrah being the most economical despite going wicketless. Hardik Pandya, Trent Boult, Mitchell Santner, and Shardul Thakur picked up a wicket each but couldn’t stop the onslaught.
Mumbai’s aggressive chase falls just short
Chasing a steep target of 241, Mumbai Indians came out with intent. Ryan Rickelton provided a brisk start with 37 off 22 balls, while Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav chipped in with handy contributions. However, regular wickets prevented MI from building sustained partnerships.
The highlight of Mumbai’s chase was a sensational knock from Sherfane Rutherford, who almost turned the game on its head. The left-hander smashed 71 runs off just 31 balls, including nine towering sixes, bringing MI back into contention during the latter stages of the innings.
Hardik also played a captain’s knock of 40 off 22 balls, keeping the chase alive. But the required rate kept climbing, and despite their late surge, MI finished at 222/5 in their 20 overs.
RCB’s bowling unit delivered under pressure, especially in the death overs. Suyash Sharma was the pick of the bowlers with two crucial wickets, while Krunal Pandya and Rasikh Dar Salam chipped in with one wicket each. Although some bowlers were expensive, they managed to strike at key moments to derail Mumbai’s chase.

Here’s how fans reacted:
RCB are analysing every over properly,(except last one) planning it well and executing almost perfectly. Even without a death-over specialist, they’re still winning games this season and that too quite convincingly.
