Fans go berserk as Rohit Sharma’s ton and Virat Kohli’s half-century propel India to comprehensive win over Australia in 3rd ODI

In the final ODI of the India tour of Australia 2025 at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), the Men in Blue delivered a resounding performance to defeat the hosts by nine wickets.

The day belonged to India’s opening and middle-order stars, backed by an impressive bowling effort that restricted the Australian lineup.

Australia innings: Matt Renshaw fights for the home team

After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Australia struggled to build momentum against a disciplined Indian attack. A solid foundation was set by the top order, but consistent wicket-taking stalled any significant scoring rate surge.

The backbone of the Australian innings was a gritty half-century from middle-order batsman Matt Renshaw, who scored 56 runs off 58 balls. Contributions also came from Mitchell Marsh (41) and Matthew Short (30), but the team ultimately crumbled, being bowled out for a modest 236 in 46.4 overs.

The star with the ball for India was young pacer Harshit Rana, who bowled exceptionally well to claim four wickets for just 39 runs in his 8.4 overs. He was well supported by the spin duo of Washington Sundar (2/44) and Axar Patel (1/18), who applied pressure through the middle overs.

India innings: The Rohit and Kohli Show

Chasing 237 for victory, the Indian chase was clinical, ruthless, and remarkably swift. The tone was set by captain Rohit Sharma, who showcased his vintage form, powering his way to a magnificent century.

Rohit’s 121 runs came off just 125 balls, featuring 13 fours and 3 towering sixes. After Shubman Gill departed for a quick 24 (the only wicket to fall, taken by Josh Hazlewood), Virat Kohli walked in to partner his captain, and the duo crushed Australia’s hopes. Kohli played a perfect anchor role while still dominating the attack, scoring 74 not out off 81 deliveries.

Their massive partnership ensured India reached the target with ease, finishing the chase in just 38.3 overs (237/1) and securing a comprehensive 9-wicket victory. The Australian bowlers, including Mitchell Starc and Adam Zampa, struggled to find a breakthrough, highlighting the quality of India’s batting display.

Player of the Match

For his spectacular century, Rohit Sharma was adjudged Player of the Match. He was named Player of the Series for his phenomenal batting performances in the 50-overs leg.

While Australia claimed the series 2-1 thanks to victories in the first two ODIs, India’s dominant performance in the final match gave the travelling fans a spectacular finish to the series.
