Horror in Tenerife as tourist killed and 9 injured on popular beach

A holidaymaker has died and nine others have been injured, three of them seriously, after being swept into the sea in Tenerife. The tragedy occurred in the well-known resort of Puerto de la Cruz, located in the north of the island and the most popular holiday location in the area.

The 112 Canary emergency service has confirmed the death of one of the ten, a woman. The injured people were transferred to different health centres. Three are seriously injured, having suffered leg and hip injuries. The deceased’s nationality or age has not yet been revealed. Local and national police rushed to the scene with the rest of the emergency resources.

Those affected mainly suffered trauma from impact against the pier or rocks, as well as complications derived from falling into the sea.

The holidaymakers were swept into the water at around 3pm on Saturday (November 8), but it was not until the evening that emergency services confirmed one death.

According to the latest report from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC), one of the affected women went into cardiorespiratory arrest at the time of assistance. Despite advanced resuscitation manoeuvres, her death could only be confirmed at the scene.

The police update also revealed that the nine others hurt have injuries of varying concern: two people with serious trauma, transferred to the University Hospital of the Canary Islands (HUC) and the Hospiten Bellevue University Hospital, and seven injured with moderate injuries, also evacuated to the same hospitals after receiving initial assistance in the area.

The 112 sent out a medicalised ambulance, a sanitised ambulance and three basic life support. Local Police, National Police and Maritime Rescue also intervened, collaborating in the rescue of the victims and in the control of the area. According to CECOES, several calls simultaneously alerted that several people had  fallen into the water after being hit by a wave while on the edge of the pier.

The 112 service states that precautionary recommendations remain in effect due to adverse maritime conditions on the north coast of Tenerife. The authorities insist on avoiding approaching docks, breakwaters and areas exposed to the waves, even in the appearance of normality.

The official report from the emergency services said: “A woman died and nine injured when she fell into the water after a sea blow in Tenerife at Puerto de la Cruz Pier at 3pm.”

112 said: “At the time indicated above, the Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES) 112 of the Government of the Canary Islands received an alert in which it communicated that several people had fallen into the water after a sea strike. The 112 immediately activated the necessary emergency resources.

“Local Police and other people who were at the scene rescued those affected from the water. Local Police officers verified that one victim was in cardiorespiratory arrest and began to practice resuscitation maneuvers.

“SUC personnel continued to practice advanced cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers without obtaining results and confirmed his death. In addition, it assessed and assisted nine other affected individuals who were transferred to the aforementioned hospitals, three of whom were in serious condition.
