IPL 2026: Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli suffer injuries during MI vs RCB clash – here’s the latest update

The IPL 2026 showdown between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the Wankhede Stadium not only delivered thrilling cricket, but it also raised serious concerns for fans. Two of India’s biggest cricket icons, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, suffered injuries during the match, casting a shadow over an otherwise high-scoring contest.

Rohit Sharma’s injury: Hamstring pull forces early exit

MI opener Rohit was forced to retire hurt during the chase after showing signs of discomfort early in his innings. The experienced opener had started positively, scoring 19 runs off just 13 balls and looking set to anchor the innings. However, things took a worrying turn in the fifth over when Rohit began limping between the wickets.

The physio was immediately called in, and although Rohit initially attempted to carry on, it became clear that the discomfort was serious. After facing the second ball of the sixth over, he made the difficult decision to walk off the field. The injury appeared to be a hamstring strain, a concern that could potentially affect MI’s campaign going forward.

Virat Kohli’s injury: Ankle issue, substituted on field

Meanwhile, on the RCB side, Virat Kohli also faced his own fitness scare. The star batter, known for his consistency and composure under pressure, looked slightly off rhythm during his innings. Despite managing to score a solid 50 off 38 balls, Kohli was visibly uncomfortable at times, receiving treatment on his left leg during the innings.

Commentator Simon Doull later confirmed that Kohli had suffered an ankle injury. As a precautionary measure, RCB decided not to risk their star player in the second innings. Instead, Jacob Bethell took the field as his substitute, highlighting the team’s cautious approach toward Kohli’s fitness.

RCB secure 18-run win over MI

Despite the injury setbacks, the match itself was packed with action and standout performances. RCB posted a massive total of 240/4, thanks to a series of impressive batting displays. Phil Salt led the charge with a blistering 78, while Kohli contributed a steady half-century. Captain Rajat Patidar also played a crucial role, scoring 53 and ensuring RCB maintained momentum throughout the innings.

Chasing a daunting target, MI fought hard but ultimately fell short. The absence of Rohit Sharma during a key phase of the innings certainly impacted their chase. However, Sherfane Rutherford’s late fireworks kept MI in the contest and gave fans a glimpse of hope. In the end, MI finished at 222/5, handing RCB a well-earned 18-run victory.

After the match, Patidar provided an update on Kohli’s condition, offering some relief to fans. “I don’t know yet, but I think he, I feel that he is okay right now,” the RC skipper said.

On the other hand, the MI camp remained silent regarding Rohit’s injury. The lack of clarity has only added to the concern, especially given Rohit’s importance to the team as a top-order batter.

With the tournament still in its early stages, both teams will be hoping their star players recover quickly. Injuries at this point could significantly influence the course of IPL 2026, making fitness management a crucial factor in the coming weeks.
