Lahore’s air quality steadily improving; positive impact of fast-track anti-smog policy emerges

Air quality in Lahore continues to improve as Punjab’s fast-track smog policy begins showing positive results. The city’s current AQI has been recorded at 168, marking a noticeable improvement compared to previous years.

According to the Environment Department, the significant drop in pollution this November is a direct outcome of the Punjab government’s fast-track strategy to combat smog. Under the instructions of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the province has issued the largest environment-friendly budget in its history and introduced a mega-level system-based action plan for the first time.

Treating smog control as a top priority, the government has accelerated the implementation of modern, technology-driven measures. A total of 41 high-tech air monitoring stations are now operational across Punjab, while drone surveillance, smog guns, and the specialized EPF force have turned the anti-smog network into a regional model.

Under emergency action by the EPA Punjab, all construction activities in high-pollution zones have been halted, and a strict zero-tolerance policy has been enforced for non-compliant industries. Major highways are being power-sprayed twice daily to reduce suspended dust, supported by an active special dust-control mission.

Crackdowns are underway against garbage burning, encroachments, and illegal parking, while waste management companies have been shifted to red-zone operations. A new clearance system has been enforced for vehicle entry into smog hotspots, making entry impossible without a valid VICS certificate.

To curb crop residue burning, drone footage, geo-fencing, and rapid field response systems are being used, with increased monitoring in agricultural areas. Daily health alerts are being issued for smog-affected residents, while free medical camps continue to operate with guaranteed availability of medicines, staff, and essential facilities.
