Middle East crisis halts Robotaxi operations in Dubai

As geopolitical tensions intensify across the Middle East, Chinese autonomous driving firm WeRide has suspended its robotaxi operations in Dubai, marking a significant setback for the region’s rapidly advancing driverless mobility ambitions.

The move comes amid escalating conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran, which has disrupted key regional hubs and raised security concerns across the Gulf a market widely regarded as a high-growth frontier for autonomous transportation.

The Gulf region has become a major overseas expansion ground for Chinese robotaxi companies, attracted by supportive regulations and strong demand for ride-hailing services.

Despite the Dubai suspension, WeRide which has operated in the region since 2021 confirmed that its robotaxi fleets in Abu Dhabi and Riyadh continue regular commercial passenger operations.

The company has shifted its regional workforce to remote work arrangements and advised employees to limit non-essential travel to ensure their safety.

Other major Chinese robotaxi players, including Apollo Go and Pony.ai, are closely monitoring the situation.

Apollo Go stated that it remains in coordination with local regulators and will adjust services if necessary to maintain operational stability and staff safety.

Pony.ai temporarily suspended on-road testing in Doha and Dubai, though testing resumed in Doha earlier this week. The company said Dubai operations will restart “at an appropriate time,” as it remains in the testing phase within the region.

The Gulf had previously been viewed as a strategic arena where Chinese and U.S. robotaxi firms would compete directly for market share.

Dubai aims for 25% of daily transportation to be smart and driverless by 2030, while Abu Dhabi targets 25% of total trips by 2040.

Saudi Arabia has set a goal of achieving 15% autonomous transport adoption by 2030 underscoring the region’s pivotal role in the global race toward driverless mobility.
