Nicole Kidman shares how family loss reshaped her life journey

Hollywood actress Nicole Kidman has revealed a major personal and professional shift following the death of her mother in September 2024, saying the loss has deeply changed her outlook on life and care.

The 58-year-old Oscar-winning star is now training to become a “death doula,” a role focused on providing emotional support and comfort to people in their final days.

Speaking at the University of San Francisco’s War Memorial Gym on April 11, Kidman explained that her decision was inspired by her mother, Janelle Ann Kidman, who passed away at the age of 84.

She admitted the move “may sound a little weird,” but said it stemmed from witnessing her mother’s loneliness during her final days.

Kidman shared that, despite support from family, she felt there was a need for compassionate, impartial individuals who can simply offer presence and solace to those nearing the end of life.

The Babygirl and Big Little Lies actress said she hopes to learn how to help people navigate their final moments with dignity and comfort.

She also reflected on her grief, noting that losing both parents—her father, Dr Antony Kidman, passed away in 2014 has left her feeling as though she has lost a “compass” and a “major guide” in life.
