Russian saboteurs plotted to blow up US planes, according to Western security officials. The campaign of terror would have rivalled the 9/11 attacks, causing massive disruption to the airline industry.
The bombshell claims come following the publication of the updated US National Security Strategy (NSS) on Friday. According to the 33-page document, Donald Trump‘s America will seek to improve its relationship with Moscow and “reestablish strategic stability with Russia.” The Kremlin welcomed the NSS, calling it “largely consistent” with Moscow’s vision.
However, Western security officials believe Russia planned to unleash a wave of terror on the US not seen since the World Trade Centre attacks in 2001.
In 2024, a series of explosions ripped through DHL logistic centres in the UK, Poland and Germany. The explosions were caused by bombs planted in parcels, which were powerful enough to have destroyed DHL cargo planes had they detonated on board.
Investigators traced the plot back to a group of Russian-backed saboteurs, who were found to have another 6 kilograms of explosives in their possession.
Security officials told the Financial Times that the saboteurs planned to blow up planes travelling to the US in the next stage of the plot.
Western security officials have already prevented a number of Russian-linked terror schemes targeting civilian infrastructure. These include plans to derail packed trains, burn down shopping centres, discharge a dam and poison water supplies.
All these plots could have potentially caused hundreds, if not thousands, of civilian casualties.
Intelligence officials fear that the plots are indicative of a strategic escalation by the Kremlin.
The head of one European intelligence agency told the FT that his officers had detected an increase in Russian surveillance of road bridges and railways throughout Europe.
In a previous interview, the former head of Poland’s Foreign Intelligence Agency told the Express that the acts of terror and sabotage Putin’s agents could carry out were “immense”.
Piotr Krawczyk said: “They can pick plenty of different targets. It can be one of the planes or trains carrying hundreds of passengers. It can be one of our refineries, one of the power stations.
“The Russians can support one of the terrorist organisations that can go after US citizens. There are still plenty of terrorist organisations all over the globe that the Russians can finance, support, and train.”
