Wanindu Hasaranga ruled out of IPL 2026; LSG eyes South African all-rounder as replacement

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have suffered a major setback just as their IPL 2026 campaign was beginning to gather rhythm. Star Sri Lankan all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga has been ruled out of the entire tournament, leaving a noticeable gap in the team’s bowling combination. The update was confirmed by the franchise’s director of cricket, Tom Moody, during LSG’s clash against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Eden Gardens. With little time to dwell on the loss, the management has already begun searching for a replacement and is expected to finalize a name within the next 24 to 48 hours.

Wanindu Hasaranga’s injury forces sudden rethink for LSG

Hasaranga, 28, had been picked up for INR 2 crore at the mini-auction and was expected to play a key role this season. However, his campaign came to an abrupt halt after he suffered a left hamstring tear during Sri Lanka’s opening match of the T20 World Cup in February. Things became more complicated when he failed to clear the mandatory fitness requirements set by Sri Lanka Cricket. As per regulations, centrally contracted players must pass these tests to secure a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for overseas leagues like the IPL, effectively shutting the door on his participation this season.

For LSG, this isn’t just about losing a bowler – it’s about missing a player who offers balance. Hasaranga’s ability to break partnerships with his leg-spin, combined with his handy lower-order hitting, made him a valuable asset in both departments. His absence forces the team to rethink its strategy midway through a competitive tournament.

South African all-rounder frontrunner to replace Hasaranga

In response, LSG has swiftly turned to the Registered Available Player Pool (RAPP) to plug the gap. According to ESPNcricinfo, South African all-rounder George Linde has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Hasaranga. While he may not carry the same profile in the IPL yet, Linde brings with him a wealth of T20 experience from leagues around the world.

At 34, Linde has built a solid reputation in the shortest format. Across 250 T20 matches, he has picked up 218 wickets at an economy rate of 7.42, while also contributing 2,746 runs at an impressive strike rate of 136.68. His all-round ability makes him a like-for-like option in terms of team balance, even if his style differs from Hasaranga’s leg-spin approach. Linde has featured in competitions such as SA20, The Hundred, Major League Cricket (MLC) and the Pakistan Super League (PSL), and was also part of South Africa’s squad for the T20 World Cup 2026.

Despite the setback, LSG have shown encouraging resilience on the field. After losing their opening game, the team has bounced back with consecutive wins and currently sits fifth on the points table. Their bowling attack has held firm, led by experienced pacer Mohammed Shami and emerging talent Prince Yadav. Meanwhile, spinners Digvesh Rathi and M Siddharth have stepped up to ensure the team doesn’t feel the absence too heavily.

As they gear up for their next fixture against Gujarat Titans (GT), the potential inclusion of Linde could add fresh depth and flexibility to the squad.
