Hong Kong singer Ekin Cheng cancels Tokyo concert as China, Japan tensions grow

Hong Kong Cantopop singer Ekin Cheng Yee-kin has called off a concert in Tokyo next month, attributing it to “unforeseen force majeure circumstances”, as tensions between China and Japan escalate.

The cancellation was announced on Tuesday evening on the social media account of Lam & Lamb Entertainment, a management company. Cheng’s concert had been scheduled for December 5 at the Yebisu Garden Place in Tokyo.

“[It] has been cancelled due to unforeseen force majeure circumstances,” the firm’s statement said.

“We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this cancellation may cause and deeply appreciate your understanding and support.”

The organiser said it would announce refund details as soon as possible, urging customers who bought tickets through the official platform to keep them until further notice.

The 58-year-old singer, who is also an actor, first gained popularity in Japan in the 1990s. His appearance in the Young and Dangerous film series, among other productions, made him an idol in the country.
